Authentications
German official documents are often only recognised overseas when their authenticity has been determined in a specific international procedure. In such a procedure the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the signatory has acted as well as, if applicable, the authenticity of the seal on the document are confirmed.
Legalisation: Legalisation describes the authentication, which is undertaken by a German public authority on a domestic official record. According to the Konsulargesetz (Consular Act), it is implemented by a consular officer in the respective embassies and consulates of the country in which the document is needed.
Apostille: The “Hague Apostille“ is a simplified form of the confirmation of the authenticity of documents. It is used for those countries, which have acceded to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (Hague Convention of 05 October 1961). Today, the simplification of the legal relations, which was able to be achieved by the signature of the member states, makes a considerable contribution to the development of globalisation, as it allows international routes to be taken, rapidly and unbureaucratically.
The member states are: Albania, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belarus (White Russia), Belgium, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Darussalam, Denmark, Dominica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Fiji, Georgia, Grenada, Greece, Guyana, Honduras, India, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Columbia, Lesotho, Latvia, Liberia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Niue, Panama, Portugal, Russian Federation, Solomon Islands, Samoa, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Switzerland, Seychelles, Zimbabwe, Spain, South Africa, Suriname, Swaziland, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Ukraine, Vanuatu, Venezuela, United States, United Kingdom, Cyprus
